Three treatments fix the look of a front tooth: bonding, veneers and crowns. They solve overlapping problems, they cost very different amounts, and the biggest difference between them is one most patients never hear about until the drill is out: how much of your own tooth is removed to make room.
Here is how the three compare, when each is the right choice, and what they cost with us in Belgrade compared with Austria, Germany, Switzerland and the USA.
The three treatments in one paragraph each
Bonding
Tooth-coloured composite resin is applied directly to the tooth, shaped by hand, and hardened with a light. Done in one appointment, usually without anaesthesia, with little or no tooth removed. It is the same material used for white fillings. Bonding repairs a chipped corner, closes a small gap, or covers a discoloured patch. It stains over time and chips more easily than ceramic.
Veneers
A thin shell of ceramic, typically 0.3 to 0.7 millimetres, made in a laboratory and bonded to the front surface of the tooth. A thin layer of enamel is removed so the veneer sits flush. Veneers change colour, shape, length and small alignment problems across several teeth at once, and they hold their colour for years. They cover only the front of the tooth.
Crowns
A cap that covers the whole tooth. The tooth is reduced by 1 to 2 millimetres on all sides. A crown is a structural repair: it holds together a tooth that is broken, heavily filled or root-treated, and it happens to look good too. Zirconium crowns are what a Hollywood smile is made of.
Side by side
| Bonding | Veneers | Crowns | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tooth removed | None or minimal | 0.3 to 0.7 mm from the front | 1 to 2 mm all around |
| Reversible | Mostly | No | No |
| Made by | Dentist, by hand, same day | Laboratory, ceramic | Laboratory, ceramic or zirconium |
| Appointments | 1 | 2 to 3, within a week | 2 to 3, within a week |
| Typical lifespan | 3 to 7 years | 10 to 15 years | 15 to 20+ years |
| Stain resistance | Low | High | High |
| Strength | Low | Medium | High |
| Fixes | Chips, small gaps, spots | Colour, shape, length, mild crowding | Broken, weak or root-treated teeth |
| Price with us, per tooth | Quoted at consultation | €300 | €250 zirconium, €200 metal-ceramic |
What they cost: Belgrade vs Western Europe and the USA
Our prices are from the price list. The other columns are typical private prices in those countries.
| Per tooth | Belgrade (us) | Austria | Germany | Switzerland | USA |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ceramic veneer | €300 | €1,400 | €1,600 | €1,850 | €2,000 |
| Zirconium crown | €250 | €1,300 | €1,450 | €1,700 | €2,000 |
| Metal-ceramic crown | €200 | €1,000 | €1,150 | €1,200 | €1,350 |
| Composite bonding | Quoted at consultation | €250 to €500 | €250 to €500 | €300 to €600 | €300 to €600 |
Notice that a veneer costs slightly more than a zirconium crown with us. That surprises people. A veneer is thinner and harder to make well, and it is placed on a healthy tooth where the margin for error is smaller. The cheaper option is not the better one for a healthy tooth, and the more expensive one is not the better one for a broken tooth.
How to choose: match the treatment to the problem
| The problem | Usual choice | Why not the others |
|---|---|---|
| One chipped corner on a healthy tooth | Bonding | A veneer or crown removes healthy tooth to fix a small defect |
| Small gap between two front teeth | Bonding or veneers | Bonding for a narrow gap; veneers if you also want to change the shape |
| Teeth that are stained and whitening does not help | Veneers | Bonding stains again; crowns remove too much tooth |
| Worn, short front teeth | Veneers or crowns | Depends on how much tooth is left; the dentist decides from the examination |
| Mildly crooked front teeth, no time for aligners | Veneers | Bonding cannot change alignment; crowns are overkill |
| Large old fillings, cracks, root-treated tooth | Crown | A veneer needs solid enamel to bond to; this tooth does not have enough |
| Full smile makeover, 20 or more teeth | Zirconium crowns, or veneers on healthy teeth | Mixed cases are common: crowns where teeth are damaged, veneers where they are not |
The question to ask any dentist: why not the less invasive option?
Every step up the ladder, from bonding to veneers to crowns, is permanent. Enamel does not grow back. So the rule we work by is simple: the least invasive treatment that will actually solve the problem and last.
This matters when comparing quotes from abroad. A plan for 20 crowns on teeth that have never had a filling should make you ask why they are not veneers, and a plan for veneers on teeth with large fillings should make you ask whether they will hold. If a clinic cannot explain the choice tooth by tooth, get a second opinion. We give one for free through the online consultation when you send photos and an X-ray.
What the procedure looks like for each
Bonding
One visit of 30 to 60 minutes per tooth. The tooth surface is roughened, composite is layered and shaped, cured, then polished. You eat normally the same day.
Veneers
- Planning: photos, a mock-up so you see the result before anything is done.
- Preparation under local anaesthesia; impressions or a scan; temporaries.
- Two to four days later: try-in, adjustments, bonding.
Done in one trip of about a week. Details on the veneers page.
Crowns
The same sequence as veneers with more tooth reduction, and for a full Hollywood smile the same one-week trip. Details on the crowns page and in the guide to crown types and costs.
Frequently asked questions
Are veneers better than crowns?
Neither is better. Veneers are the right treatment for healthy teeth with cosmetic problems; crowns are the right treatment for damaged teeth. Putting a veneer on a broken tooth fails, and putting a crown on a healthy tooth sacrifices tooth for nothing.
Is bonding worth it?
For a single chip or a small gap, yes: cheap, quick, no tooth removed. For changing the colour of a whole smile, no: composite stains and chips, and you would be redoing it within a few years.
Can veneers be put on crooked teeth?
Mildly crooked, yes; the veneer is shaped to make the tooth look straight. Significantly crooked teeth need orthodontics first, or the veneers would have to be too thick or the tooth reduced too much. Aligners, then veneers, is a common sequence.
How many veneers do I need?
As many teeth as show when you smile broadly, usually 6 to 10 in the upper jaw. Fewer looks uneven unless the neighbouring teeth already match.
Do veneers or crowns hurt?
Preparation is under local anaesthesia. Some sensitivity for a week or two afterwards is normal.
Next step
Send two photos, one smiling and one with the lips pulled back, plus an X-ray if you have one, through the free online consultation. Dr Perduv will tell you tooth by tooth whether bonding, veneers or crowns are the right choice, and what it would cost.
